Dive Bar Night is BACK! THIS FRIDAY... JAN 18th, 2008!

Greetings People!
The Dive Bar Crew is BACK! It's hard to believe, but after a 7 month hiatus, THIS FRIDAY, January 18th, 2008 marks the 28th legendary Austin Dive Bar Night (aka DBN). In celebration of Big Dave's birthday, Renee's first ever DBN, and the spirit of "livin' back in the day"... The Dive Bar Crew proudly presents: "The Campus Tour" - Posse East, Crown & Anchor, and Nasty's. Keep reading for more details. Just to give you an idea, the last DBN was June 8th 2007. As you can see, we've gotten all fancy on ya with this "blogging" high tech thing. Hope y'all like it! Let's get started...

So, Sista Clare sent me a 2006 article from Austin360.com called "obey the ways of the dive bar". How the hell they wrote this article without interviewing the original Austin dive bar connaisseurs, I couldn't tell you. I'm not going to plagarize any of their material, because I've got my own. After almost 28 DBN events, there's something we need to address, and that's "Dive Bar Etiquette".

For those of you who have been around with us long enough... these stories (and images) are all too real. New to the DBN scene? Hold on tight. Welcome to the family. Good luck.

Etiquette Rule #1: Bring CASH.
Before there were credit cards... there were dive bars. Hell, before you were born... there were dive bars. If you've ever seen that VISA commercial where everything comes to a screeching halt because somebody didn't use their debit card? Well dive bars are completely the opposite. No ATM. No tabs allowed. No debit/credit cards. Let me reiterate... BRING CASH!

Etiquette Rule #2: Be cool to "the locals".
Be cool to the "locals"! But... how will we be able to determine a local from one of us? Trust me... you'll know. They look something like this dude (Re: Horseshoe Lounge DBN #3):

Etiquette Rule #3: Be cool to the bartenders and TIP.
General rule and blessing of a dive bar is that the beer is cold. The beer is cheap. Key word being "beer". Don't be that fool who orders an apple martini and gets their ass kicked out. What else could you want? Just be cool to the bartenders. Most of them have been there long before we started goin', and will be there long after we stop goin'. As the rules say at Ginny's... No Fussin' Cussin' Hasslin' or Wresslin'!

Etiquette Rule #4: Dress appropriately.
There was a guy we nicknamed "Bocephus" at Poodle Dog Lounge. Thought it would be kosher to wear overalls. No shirt. Pleeeeease wear a shirt. This should be a given, but some things need to be reiterated. See below for a DBN #14 reference of what NOT to wear. Leave your pimps and hoes outfits at home. I'm not sure if he made it, or bought it; however, dude is pimpin' a white fake rabbit fur coat AND sparkling blue hat. But hey... that's Dive Bar Night for you.
Etiquette Rule #5: Don't drink from a pitcher.
Pretty cut and dry. Don't drink from a pitcher. By the way, that's Big Dave (repeat offender).

Etiquette Rule #6: Stay off the pole!!!
I think it was Chris Rock who said to all the parents who have daughters, you have one goal in life. Keep them off "the pole." That is your one goal. Ladies AND gentlemen, I don't care how old you are... stay off the pole. Big respect to the late Stella (from Carousel Lounge - DBN #20):
Etiquette Rule #7: The "P" Rule.
Hygiene standards will be lowered. It's not called a "dive" for nothin'.
A) "P" before you arrive, OR
B) don't complain when you have to "P" in one of these places.
That's K-Bone (aka Kate) at Devil's Backbone (DBN #24) next to a velvet picture of a devil on "the john". Fitting... since it's pure hell trying to use the bathroom at a dive bar.

Etiquette Rule #8: Don't make an ass of yourself.
A designated driver in the group is a good rule of thumb anytime drinking is involved. If you feel the necessity to go "Britney" on us, you're on your own. Be safe. SERIOUSLY... call a cab.
Etiquette Rule #9: HAVE FUN!!!!
People watching is AWESOME at dive bars. Embrace the night. Try something new. Meet some interesting folks. Just have some fun!

Etiquette Rule# 10: Follow rules 1-9

Friday, January 18th, 2008 - Austin, Texas... Dive Bar Night #28!

So where are we going?

STOP #1:
Posse East - Time: 6:30ish - 8:00ish

2900 Duval St. Austin, TX 78705. (512) 477-2111

We're kicking off "The Campus Tour" at a little hole known as Posse East. If you blink, you'll miss it on the corner of San Jacinto and Duval down by the UT Campus. Let's kick the night off right! Posse East on an early Friday evening for Happy Hour? What could be better!?

STOP #2: Crown & Anchor - 8:00ish - 9:30ish
2911 San Jacinto Blvd, Austin, TX 78705. (512) 322-9168

Probably one of the best burgers in Austin, and clearly a magnificent selection of beer and people watching. Walking distance from Posse East, this is a DBN favorite.

STOP #3: Nasty's - 10:00 - Midnight
606 Maiden Ln, Austin, TX 78705. (512) 453-4349

Hard to find, but a short driving distance from Crown & Anchor. Off Guadalupe between 35th and 37th Street. Hole of all holes and that's what makes it a TRUE Austin dive bar. Put it this way... the Austin All Blacks and Huns rugby teams frequent this joint. The name says it all... Nasty's.

BONUS STOP: Common Interest - Midnight - ???
8440 Burnet Rd # 148. Austin, TX 78757. (512) 453-6796
For all those lovers of the Karaoke, and brave enough to withstand the night, we'll "unofficially" finish at Common Interest. Sure, it's no longer a dive; but, let's pay respect to a place that was such a dive that it actually burned down, got condemned, and had to be rebuilt.
